The final GDL step is the unrestricted license. You earn it by showing a clean record through a full year of provisional driving.
To get an unrestricted license you must: Have held a provisional license for the 12 months immediately before you apply Have no traffic-violation conviction in the 90 days before applying Have no traffic violations pending when you apply Not have been found guilty of, or have pending, an alcohol or drug offense during the provisional period Handbook p. 5 ↗ 12 months Time on a provisional license immediately before applying
Handbook p. 5 ↗ Know the rule
Any alcohol or drug offense during the provisional period, whether you were found guilty or it is still pending, blocks the unrestricted license.
Handbook p. 5 ↗ Once licensed, you'll renew on a regular cycle. New Mexico gives you a window both before and after the expiration date.
Know the rule
To renew, bring your current license and one other proof of identity.
Handbook p. 5 ↗ Know the rule
At renewal you may be required to take a vision test and a knowledge test, and in special cases a driving test.
Handbook p. 5 ↗ Put it into practice
Your provisional license lapsed for two months last year, and you now want an unrestricted license. You must have held the provisional license for the 12 months immediately before applying, so a gap is a problem.
A useful reminder Don't mix the two 90s: 90 days with no conviction before a GDL application, and renewal up to 90 days BEFORE expiration (30 days after).
Check your understanding Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
