A 3-minute lesson from the New Jersey course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Every applicant takes a vision screening, and some health conditions need review. Drivers who already hold a license elsewhere may skip some tests. New Jersey also asks new drivers to take a safety pledge named for Nikhil.
Know the rule
A vision screening is required for all motorists. The MVC may refer applicants with impaired vision to a physician and may periodically require a vision recheck.
Tell the examiner about health problems; a medical review may be necessary. CDL holders must submit a CDL Holder Self-Certification form and, if applicable, a medical examiner's certificate from a federally certified medical examiner.
Applicants 18 or older with a valid, non-provisional license from any of the 50 states, D.C., Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands may have the knowledge and road tests waived. They must meet 6-Point ID, get a four-year basic license, and surrender the old license.
Out-of-state applicants between 17 and 18 with a valid license get a probationary license for one year and must follow New Jersey's GDL requirements and restrictions.
All out-of-country applicants must pass the knowledge test and a vision screening and may have to pass a road test. Test results are valid for two years.
A 17-year-old moves from Pennsylvania with a valid license. New Jersey issues her a probationary license for one year, and she must follow GDL rules such as the 11:01 pm to 5:00 am curfew.
