A 3-minute lesson from the New Jersey course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Once your permit is validated, you practice, then book a road test. On test day, the MVC checks your paperwork, your vehicle and the person who came with you. Missing any item can end the test before it starts.
Know the rule
The MVC validates your permit for practice after you pass the knowledge test and vision screening and, if applicable, an approved behind-the-wheel course.
GDL permit holders under 21 need at least six months of supervised practice, including 50 hours with 10 in darkness, before a road test appointment. A completed BA-CSD form from a parent, guardian or supervising driver is required.
A licensed driver must always stay in the vehicle; it may not be moved, even in the test line, without one. If that driver is licensed outside NJ or has less than three years' experience, he or she must drive the vehicle to the test area.
The MVC does not supply vehicles. Only MVC examiners may be in the vehicle during the test. Out-of-state vehicles must meet their home state's insurance ID laws.
Your aunt, licensed in New York, brings you to the road test. Because she is licensed outside New Jersey, she must drive the car to the test area, and she has to stay in the car with you until the examiner takes over.
