You can't control other drivers or the weather, but you can control your own vehicle's condition and your position in it. A quick check and a properly set seat and mirrors come before you ever turn the key.

Know the rule

Before driving, make sure the vehicle has a valid inspection sticker on the windshield. Every vehicle must be inspected by an approved Official Inspection Station.

Handbook p. 18 ↗

Know the rule

Under- or over-inflated tires, or tires with low tread, cause safety problems. Have tire pressure checked once a month.

Handbook p. 18 ↗

Know the rule

Adjust your seat and mirrors before driving so you can see clearly, fully control the wheel and pedals, and so the air bag deploys properly.

Handbook p. 18 ↗

Know the rule

Sit upright with your feet on the floor. Slouching can reduce how well the restraint system works.

Handbook p. 18 ↗

Proper seat position:

  • Your foot pivots smoothly from brake to accelerator with the heel kept on the floor
  • Top of the steering wheel no higher than the top of your shoulders, and below chin level
  • 10 inches between your chest and the steering wheel
  • Not so far forward you can't steer, and not reclined excessively
  • Head rest touching the back of your head, not below the ears

10 inches

Distance between your chest and the steering wheel

Handbook p. 18 ↗

Head restraint (head rest)

Designed to prevent whiplash in a crash. Adjust it so it touches the back of your head, not below the ears.

Handbook p. 18 ↗

Know the rule

The inside mirror is the primary mirror for traffic behind you; adjust it to frame the rear window. Set a day/night mirror for the current time of day.

Handbook p. 18 ↗

Know the rule

Even properly adjusted mirrors don't remove all blind spots; use head checks whenever possible.

Handbook p. 18 ↗

Put it into practice

You borrow a friend's car. Before pulling out, check for a valid inspection sticker, slide the seat so your heel stays on the floor and your chest is about 10 inches from the wheel, raise the head rest to the back of your head, and set the mirror to frame the rear window.
