Anything that can fly off your vehicle is a hazard to everyone behind you. NH has specific laws on securing loads, equipping trailers and clearing snow and ice, and snow removal is a law unique to this state.

Know the rule

Driving with an unsecured load is against the law and extremely dangerous; if it causes a crash you may face a costly fine.

Handbook p. 19 ↗

Secure load

A load is secure only when nothing can slide, shift, fall or sift onto the roadway, or become airborne.

Handbook p. 19 ↗

Every trailer must have:

  • Properly mounted wheels, lubricated and covered with fenders or mud guards
  • Properly inflated tires
  • Proper tail, stop, turn signal, license plate and side marker lamps
  • Reflectors

It is the driver's responsibility to remove all snow and ice before driving; it can block your view and come loose and endanger others.

Handbook p. 20 ↗

Under RSA 265:79-b, driving in a way that endangers or is likely to endanger any person or property can be a Negligent Driving violation.

$250 to $500

Negligent Driving penalty, first offense (more for later offenses)

Handbook p. 20 ↗

Put it into practice

After a storm you clear the windshield but leave a slab of snow on the roof. On the highway it slides off onto the car behind you. Under RSA 265:79-b that can mean a $250 to $500 fine for a first offense. Clear the whole vehicle.
