Regulatory signs state the law: which way traffic moves, what lanes do, turns, speed and parking. Route signs tell you what kind of road you're on, and guide signs help you find places and services.

Know the rule

Regulatory signs are square or rectangular with letters or symbols. A red circle with a red slash over a symbol prohibits that action.

Put it into practice

You see a sign for I-293. The first digit, 2, is even, so the route goes through or around a city rather than into it.
