Driving is a privilege, and your record follows you — even violations from other states land on it. Nevada's demerit point system flags risky drivers: 12 points in 12 months means a suspension.
Know the rule
Crashes and convictions become part of your driving record, including traffic violations in other states.
Handbook p. 77 ↗How long violations stay
| Type | Period |
|---|---|
| Most violations (reportable to your insurer) | 3 years |
| DUI-related convictions (on your record) | 7 years |
In any 12-month period means your license is suspended
Handbook p. 77 ↗Know the rule
Every traffic violation has a point value. Points are entered when the DMV gets a conviction notice or civil infraction from a court, and are counted over a 12-month period.
Handbook p. 77 ↗Know the rule
With 3 to 11 points, a DMV-approved traffic safety course removes up to 3 points — only once in a 12-month period. The conviction itself stays in your driving history.

Major offenses such as DUI or causing substantial bodily harm get no points — they bring license revocation.

Handbook p. 78 ↗Know the rule
It's illegal to give false information on a license application, alter your license, lend it to someone, or use another person's license.
Handbook p. 78 ↗Put it into practice
You have 9 points: 4 for following too closely, 3 for going 25 over, and 2 for impeding traffic. DMV-approved traffic school can bring you to 6 — but you can't use it again for 12 months.
