Once licensed, keep your record current: renew on time, report moves and name changes, and replace a lost card right away. Nevada ID cards follow many of the same rules as licenses.

Know the rule

A renewal notice is mailed to you, but it's your responsibility to renew on or before the expiration date on the front of your license.

Handbook p. 19 ↗

Know the rule

Renewal may require vision, knowledge and on-road tests to re-evaluate your skills and set appropriate restrictions.

Handbook p. 19 ↗

Know the rule

Nevada does not automatically extend licenses for military personnel; active-duty members temporarily out of state may renew by mail.

Restricted licenses may be issued to:

  • Drivers age 14 and 15 with a family hardship or who need to drive to and from school
  • People who have served half of their required suspension or revocation period
Handbook p. 19 ↗

Know the rule

If your license becomes illegible, lost or stolen, apply for a duplicate immediately, online or in person. Bring as much ID as possible to speed things up.

Handbook p. 20 ↗

Nevada ID card — you must:

  • Be at least 10 years old
  • Complete an application
  • Present proof of identity (the same documents as for a license)
Handbook p. 20 ↗

Know the rule

A Nevada ID card is valid for eight years and expires on your birthday. If issued on limited-term immigration documents, it expires on your departure date, or one year from issuance if none is listed.

Handbook p. 20 ↗

Know the rule

Getting an ID card automatically surrenders your driving privileges and any Nevada or out-of-state ID card, whether or not you have it with you (seasonal resident ID applicants excepted).

Handbook p. 20 ↗

Know the rule

Traffic citations while holding only an ID card count against your future driving privileges. With 12 or more demerits in 12 months, you must reinstate privileges before you can get a license.

Handbook p. 20 ↗

Optional card designations:

  • Veteran: bring an honorable discharge document and sign a release to Nevada Veterans Services
  • Medical indicator: present a Confidential Physician Report (DLD-7) listing one medical code
Handbook p. 20 ↗

Put it into practice

You move across Henderson on March 1. You must notify the DMV by March 31, and you can do it online. If you held a CDL, you'd have to make the change in person.
