Riding a motorcycle takes its own permit, tests and skills. Permit riders practice under close supervision from another licensed rider — who must also be on a motorcycle, not following in a car.
The MOST starts with a pre-trip inspection: know your controls — choke, gear-shift, brakes, spark arrester, starter, throttle, ignition and clutch. The examiner also checks turn signals and horn, then tests starts, stops, quick stops and turns.
Passing an approved motorcycle safety course may substitute for the motorcycle tests. Surrendering a valid out-of-state motorcycle license or endorsement may waive the road test.
Ana, 19, gets a motorcycle permit, which lasts 6 months. Her uncle, licensed for 10 years, supervises from his own motorcycle — never from his car — and she rides only in daylight, alone, and off the freeway.
