A 3-minute lesson from the Michigan course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Work zones change lanes, lower speeds and put people right next to traffic. Michigan doubles fines there and adds extra speeding points, so slow down and follow every sign and flagger.
Know the rule
Work-area warning signs are diamond-shaped with black lettering on an orange or yellow background.
Work zone signs may mean part of a lane, a whole lane or the whole road is blocked, or that work is next to the road, on shoulders or in ditches. Zones may last a short time or one or more seasons, with signs posted in advance.
When lanes merge in a work zone, white-and-orange barrels and signs mark the merge. Follow the signs on when and how to merge, and watch for workers using signs or hand signals.
State and local road agencies may add flashing or oscillating green lights to maintenance vehicles, used only during road work. Private contractors may not use green lights. When you see them, slow down and drive with caution.
A "Where Workers Present 45" zone has no workers today. You may drive at the normal posted speed — but if you speed there when workers are present, the fine is doubled and 16 mph over earns 5 points.
