A 2-minute lesson from the Maryland course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Good lane discipline keeps traffic predictable. Stay in one lane, plan turns early, and treat U-turns as a special, risky move that isn't legal everywhere.
Know the rule
Drive in a single lane. Do not switch lanes until you determine it is safe.
You missed your street and want to U-turn at the next intersection. First check for a No U-Turn sign. If it's allowed, signal left, stop, let oncoming cars pass, then finish in the right-hand lane.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
Generally, where should you keep your vehicle positioned on the road?
In the center of the road
As far left as possible
Wherever traffic is lightest
To the right of the center of the road
Answer: To the right of the center of the road
You should generally keep your vehicle to the right of the center of the road unless passing or another exception applies.
Before making a U-turn where they are allowed, what must you do first?
Turn immediately without signaling
Check they're allowed; yield to oncoming traffic
Signal right and pull onto the shoulder
Wait for a green arrow signal
Answer: Check they're allowed; yield to oncoming traffic
First check that U-turns are allowed; if they are, turn on your left signal, stop and yield to oncoming traffic, then turn into the right-hand lane going the other way.
