The road test shows you can control the car and drive safely in normal traffic. Take it at OMV or with a certified Third Party Tester. The examiner won't trick you or ask you to do anything illegal, but points come off for every driving error.

Know the rule

For a road test at OMV, you provide the vehicle. It must be in safe condition, pass a safety inspection, and have a valid inspection sticker, current plate and registration.

Handbook p. 14 ↗

Your test vehicle must have:

  • A working speedometer
  • Functional seat belts (required in any vehicle made after 1964)
  • All necessary equipment; you'll do a safety equipment check first
  • Proof of liability insurance on that vehicle
  • No loose objects that could break or cause injury
Handbook p. 14 ↗

Know the rule

Only you, the OMV examiner and an interpreter (if needed) may be in the car during the test.

Handbook p. 14 ↗

Know the rule

Third Party Testers are certified by OMV and charge a fee. For a fee, they may also provide a vehicle for the test.

Handbook p. 14 ↗

You're graded on:

  • Backing and parking between cars
  • Yielding the right-of-way
  • Approach to corners and turning
  • Keeping in your lane and following others
  • Use of signals
  • Attention and response to signs and signals
Handbook p. 14 ↗

You fail the road test for:

  • Any traffic law violation
  • Any dangerous action or incident
  • Not cooperating or refusing to follow instructions
  • A collision
  • Too many minor mistakes added together
Handbook p. 15 ↗

Know the rule

If you fail and don't already have a permit, you may be issued one so you can practice, then come back to retest.

Handbook p. 15 ↗

Know the rule

A minor's custodial or domiciliary parent, tutor or legal guardian must come along, show ID, sign the application, and prove the test vehicle is insured.

Handbook p. 15 ↗

Know the rule

Road tests given at OMV are suspended during inclement weather.

Handbook p. 15 ↗

Put it into practice

Your car runs fine but the speedometer needle is stuck at zero. The examiner can't give you the test: the speedometer must work and the car must be legally equipped. Fix it or book a Third Party Tester who provides a car.
