The intermediate license lets you drive alone for the first time, with two limits: a late-night curfew and a cap on young passengers. The program keeps early solo driving to lower-risk situations, such as daylight and few teen passengers.

To get an intermediate license you must:

  • Complete Stage 1 (the learner's permit)
  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Pass the road skills driving test with at least 80%

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

An out-of-state applicant who is 16 and has held a license or permit at least 180 days may skip the permit stage and get an intermediate license.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

Any driver under 17 is barred from driving between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless accompanied by a licensed parent, guardian, adult at least 21, or sibling 18.

Handbook p. 103 ↗

Put it into practice

It's 7:30 p.m. and you (16, intermediate license) want to drive two friends, both 17, to the movies. That's two non-family passengers under 21 after 6 p.m., which isn't allowed. Take one friend.

Put it into practice

At 11:30 p.m. you're driving home alone from a friend's house. That breaks the curfew. With your 19-year-old sister in the car, the same drive would be legal.
