A good turn is planned: search the corners, signal early, get into the right lane position, and look through the turn to where you're going. A turnabout uses a driveway to reverse direction when you can't simply drive around the block.

When turning:

  • Search all corners for traffic controls, pedestrians and other vehicles, and signal
  • Enter and keep the lane position closest to the direction you want to go
  • Look through the turn to the farthest point possible along your path
  • Accelerate smoothly, make sure the signal cancels, and check traffic behind
  • Don't signal just because the driver ahead is signaling—only if you're turning too

Turnabout

A turn that uses a street, alley or driveway to legally reverse your direction when it isn't practical or possible to drive around a block.

Handbook p. 49 ↗
500 feet

Your car must be visible this far in either direction before a turnabout

Backing turnabout (driveway on the right):

  • Signal right; stop and check traffic to the sides and rear
  • Back until the rear bumper reaches the near edge of the driveway
  • Backing slowly, steer rapidly all the way right; straighten the wheels and stop when centered
  • Shift to drive, check both ways; if clear, signal and turn left into the proper lane
Handbook p. 49 ↗

Know the rule

If backing onto a two-lane road, don't center the vehicle in the road—stay right of the center line, or on your side if there's no center line. Master the turnabout before your skills test.

Handbook p. 49 ↗

Put it into practice

You're turning left from a two-lane street at a green light. Signal 100 feet before the intersection, move to the left-most part of your lane, yield to oncoming traffic, then look through the turn and finish in the correct lane.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

  1. Not signal yourself unless you are also going to turn
  2. Signal too, to warn drivers behind you
