A work zone is an area of roadwork that may involve lane closures, detours and moving equipment. Work zones have become increasingly dangerous for both workers and drivers.

Know the rule

When approaching a work zone, watch for signs, cones, barrels, large vehicles and workers. Work zone signs have an orange background with black letters or symbols.

Handbook p. 74 ↗

Know the rule

Always reduce your speed in a work zone, even if no workers are present. Narrower lanes and rough pavement are hazards on their own.

Handbook p. 74 ↗

Know the rule

Kentucky allows fines to be doubled in a highway work zone when signs announce the work zone and that fines are doubled there, and at least one bona fide worker is present.

Handbook p. 74 ↗

In a work zone you should:

  • Reduce speed, increase following distance, watch surrounding traffic and be ready to stop
  • Use extreme caution at night, whether or not workers are present
  • Adjust your lane position to give workers and construction vehicles room
  • Obey the posted work zone signs until you see 'End Road Work'
  • Expect delays, plan for them and leave early
  • Use alternate routes and avoid work zones when you can

Put it into practice

At 11 p.m. you enter a lit work zone with no workers in sight. Slow down anyway, leave extra following distance, and keep obeying the work zone signs until you pass the 'End Road Work' sign.
