School zones and funeral processions
A 3-minute lesson from the Illinois course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
School zones and funeral processions ask you to slow down and give way. In a school zone, children may step out without warning. In a funeral procession, the whole line of cars has the right of way.
In a marked school zone, 6:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on school days when children are present, you must:
Stop wireless phone use unless hands-free (single-sided headset allowed)
Reduce speed to 20 mph
Stop and yield to any children or adults in the crosswalk area
A posted school speed zone applies on school days when children are present (usual hours 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., but hours may vary), where a hazard exists from children close to traffic, or when a light is flashing.
A line of cars with headlights and hazard lights on is crossing your intersection, and your light turns green. Wait. You must yield to every vehicle in the procession. Don't cut into the line.
