A 3-minute lesson from the Illinois course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Orange signs and devices mean you're entering a work zone, where lanes shift and workers are close by. Guide signs help you find your way. Hazardous materials placards warn of dangerous cargo.
Know the rule
Construction and maintenance warning signs are orange. They warn of changing road conditions and help keep highway workers safe.
WORKERS AHEAD signs are posted far enough ahead for you to adjust. Workers may be close to your lane. Slow to the posted work-zone limit, stay alert, and keep a safe distance from traffic barriers.
Warning lights help you see drums and barricades at night. Arrow boards warn of an upcoming lane closure or caution, and show which way to merge or move.
Portable changeable message signs give real-time information: slow or stopped traffic, lane or road closures, delays, changes in road alignment, or detours. Follow their messages.
Parking spaces with the Persons with Disabilities sign are reserved for vehicles with Persons with Disabilities plates, parking placards and Veteran plates.
Guide signs tell you where you are, what road you're on and how to reach a destination. Most are rectangular, but county road signs and freeway route markers have other shapes. Their color depends on the information.
A hazardous materials placard shows the presence and type of hazardous cargo, using symbols, colors and text. The Department of Transportation requires them, and they help emergency responders.
