Moving to Georgia? You have 30 days after becoming a resident to get a Georgia license or permit. How easy the switch is depends on whether your old license came from another U.S. state or D.C., or from another country.

30 days

To apply for a Georgia license or permit after becoming a resident

Handbook p. 11 ↗

Know the rule

A new resident without a valid license or permit from another state follows the first-time rules: teens use the teen licensing requirements; adults 18 or older use the standard requirements.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

Under 18 with a valid out-of-state license or permit: you can normally get a comparable Georgia one, but you must first meet every Georgia requirement, including school enrollment, driver education and ADAP.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Age 18+ transferring a license from another state or D.C.:

  • Surrender your valid license (expired less than 2 years)
  • Can't surrender it? Bring a certified driving history (MVR) dated within 30 days showing valid status
  • Be 18, or 17 if surrendering a Class C equivalent with no time, route, purpose or passenger limits
  • Know your full SSN; prove identity, citizenship or lawful presence, and residency (2 documents)
  • Bring originals or certified copies (no faxes), and pass a vision test
Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

Non-citizens are not required to surrender their foreign non-commercial license or permit.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

Licenses, permits and IDs issued outside the 50 states and D.C. are non-transferable. You complete the full process for a new Georgia document, including the knowledge, road and vision exams.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

If you don't have your out-of-country license, bring a driving history printed in English, dated within the last 30 days, from the issuing country.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

Citizens of certain foreign countries may be exempt from knowledge and skills testing; the list is at dds.georgia.gov.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

Beware of fake DMV websites that charge for materials. By law they must say they aren't affiliated with the state. Official Georgia sites use .gov, like dds.georgia.gov.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Put it into practice

You move from Florida at 25 with a valid Florida license. Surrender it, bring proof of identity, lawful presence and two residency documents, know your SSN and pass the vision test. The transfer requirements don't include a knowledge or road test.
