A 3-minute lesson from the Georgia course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Not everyone who visits DDS needs a license. Georgia offers state ID cards, special cards for people with disabilities, and free licenses for veterans, their spouses and National Guard members.
All previous ID cards must be surrendered. If you no longer have your old license, ID or permit, bring a certified Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) from the previous state.
All veterans who are Georgia citizens, actively served, and were released with any discharge other than dishonorable can get a free Veterans License or ID card.
Veterans bring their original DD214, or a DS-516 Certificate of Eligibility from the State Department of Veterans Service, and must pass a vision test for a first Class C veteran's license.
Honorary License (no fee): for the unlicensed spouse of a disabled, honorably separated veteran, or the unmarried surviving spouse of a deceased honorably separated veteran.
A free, distinctive National Guard license goes to Georgia National Guard or active reserve members in good standing who have had active duty. Form DS-318 is required at issuance and at every renewal.
Sam served in the Army and was released with a general discharge. As a Georgia citizen, Sam brings the DD214 to a DDS center, passes the vision test and gets a free Class C Veterans License.
