A 3-minute lesson from the Delaware course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Beyond the basics, Delaware limits what you can add to a vehicle. Extra lights, window tint, noise devices, towing setups and studded tires all have rules—and some changes are simply illegal on an ordinary vehicle.
Optional equipment rules:
Spotlights: up to 2; no part of the beam aimed left of, or more than 100 feet ahead of, the vehicle
Fog lights: up to 2, white or yellow, 12 to 30 inches high; beam drops at least 4 inches in the first 25 feet
Back-up lights: any color from white to amber
No colored lights beyond factory lights, marker lamps and turn signals (emergency vehicles excepted)
No more than four lights of 300 candlepower or more may be lit on the front of a vehicle at one time. Headlights must be mounted 24 to 54 inches high, measured from the lamp center to the ground.
A motor vehicle may tow only one vehicle (a tractor and semi-trailer may tow one other). The connection may be no longer than 15 feet; if it's a chain, rope or cable, attach a red flag at least 12 inches square.
Window tint is prohibited on the windshield below the top five inches (the AS-1 line), on the windows to the driver's immediate left and right, and over any lights or the license plate.
A vehicle with tint must have outside mirrors on both sides. Aftermarket tint beside the driver requires an approved tint waiver kept in the vehicle at all times.
Unauthorized plates, frames, accessories or symbols on the license plate are prohibited, as is any light, lamp or reflector that changes the vehicle's original design or performance.
You're towing a friend's car home with a rope. Keep the gap between the vehicles to 15 feet or less, and tie a red flag at least 12 inches square to the rope so other drivers can see it.
