Traffic lights tell you when to stop and go, but each color comes with conditions: you still yield on green, you don't slam the brakes if you're already in the intersection on yellow, and flashing lights mean something different from steady ones.

Know the rule

Traffic lights are usually at intersections. When together, they are green, yellow and red from bottom to top. Some locations have single green, yellow or red lights.

Handbook p. 47 ↗

Know the rule

Red means stop. Wait until the light turns green and there's no crossing traffic. You may turn right on red after a full stop if no traffic is coming and no sign prohibits it; watch for pedestrians.

Handbook p. 47 ↗

Know the rule

Yellow means the light is about to turn red: stop if it is safe to do so. If you're already in the intersection when it turns yellow, don't stop — continue through.

Handbook p. 47 ↗

Know the rule

Green means you may go, but you must yield to emergency vehicles and others as required. If the light turns green while you're stopped, let crossing traffic clear first. On a steady green, turn left only when safe; turning right, yield to pedestrians.

HAWK signal

High-Intensity Activated crossWalK: a push-button pedestrian signal with one yellow light centered below two red lights. When activated, vehicles must stop while pedestrians cross.

Handbook p. 47 ↗

HAWK signal phases

HAWK signal phases
DisplayWhat drivers do
DarkNot activated — proceed through the crossing
Flashing yellowA pedestrian has activated the signal
Solid yellowYour movement is ending; red is coming
Solid redPedestrians in crosswalk — stop
Flashing redStop; go once pedestrians clear the crosswalk

HAWK signal - solid red (stop, pedestrians in crosswalk)
HAWK signal showing solid red: stop

Put it into practice

You're approaching a HAWK signal that turns flashing red after the solid red. Stay stopped until the pedestrian finishes crossing, then proceed with care — the signal is about to go dark.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

You are stopped at a red light and want to go straight. When may you proceed?
  1. When no cross traffic is visible
  2. After a full stop, if the way is clear
  3. When it turns green and crossing traffic clears
  4. When the cross street's light turns yellow

Answer: When it turns green and crossing traffic clears

You must wait until the traffic light turns green and there is no crossing traffic before you may move ahead.

Handbook p. 47 ↗
You are already in the intersection when the light turns yellow. What should you do?
  1. Continue through; do not stop
  2. Stop at the far crosswalk
  3. Stop immediately in the intersection
  4. Stop if no one is behind you

Answer: Continue through; do not stop

If you are in the intersection when the yellow light comes on, do not stop; continue through the intersection.

Handbook p. 47 ↗
What does a flashing red traffic light mean?
  1. The same as a stop sign
  2. The light is malfunctioning and should be ignored
  3. The same as a yield sign
  4. Slow down and proceed with caution

Answer: The same as a stop sign

A flashing red traffic light means the same as a stop sign; you must come to a full stop.

Handbook p. 47 ↗
What does a flashing yellow traffic light mean?
  1. The light is about to turn red
  2. Slow down and proceed with caution
  3. Stop and wait for it to turn green
  4. Stop completely, then proceed

Answer: Slow down and proceed with caution

A flashing yellow traffic light means slow down and proceed with caution.

Handbook p. 47 ↗
What does a yellow arrow signal mean if you are turning in the direction of the arrow?
  1. Turn, but yield to oncoming traffic
  2. You must stop immediately regardless of position
  3. You may proceed with no restriction
  4. Green arrow protection ending; prepare to stop

Answer: Green arrow protection ending; prepare to stop

A yellow arrow means the green arrow protection is ending; if turning in that direction, prepare to stop.

Handbook p. 47 ↗
At a HAWK pedestrian signal, what does a flashing red signal mean?
  1. Drivers may proceed with no restriction
  2. Pedestrians may not yet cross
  3. Deactivating: stop, then go once clear
  4. The signal has just activated; stop indefinitely

Answer: Deactivating: stop, then go once clear

Flashing red means the HAWK signal is about to deactivate; drivers must stop but may proceed once pedestrians have cleared.
