A 3-minute lesson from the California course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Every applicant takes a vision test, and first-time applicants take a multiple-choice knowledge test. Knowing the retake rules and what is not allowed in the testing room keeps surprises away.
Know the rule
DMV tests all applicants to make sure they can see well enough to drive safely.
On the drive test, the examiner may give two or more instructions at once, for example: turn left at the next street, then left again at the first intersection.
A 16-year-old fails the knowledge test on a Monday. The failure day does not count, so the seven-day wait starts Tuesday and they can retest the following Tuesday at the earliest.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
