A 2-minute lesson from the California course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Your California driver's license lets you drive on public roads, but only the vehicle types your license class covers. Before you get one, you must pass a knowledge test and a behind-the-wheel drive test, both based on the handbook.
Most people need a noncommercial Class C license. Commercial vehicles, motorcycles and other vehicle types need a different class of license.
Know the rule
You must have the correct license class for the type of vehicle you drive.
Your friend has a California ID card and asks to borrow your car for a quick errand. An ID card is for identification only and never lets someone drive, so they cannot legally drive your car on it.
Check your understanding
