Your license class says what you may drive. Most new drivers get Class C, and motorcycles need Class M. Restriction codes are letters printed on the license that limit when or how you may drive.
Know the rule
Class C lets you drive a single vehicle or combination (except motorcycles) with a GVWR less than 26,001 pounds, or such a vehicle towing one with a GVWR of no more than 10,000 pounds.
Handbook p. 6 ↗ 26,001 lbs Class C covers vehicles with a GVWR less than this
Handbook p. 6 ↗ 10,000 lbs Highest GVWR of a towed vehicle allowed with Class C
Handbook p. 6 ↗ Know the rule
A Class C CDL also allows vehicles designed to carry 16 or more passengers (including the driver) or vehicles placarded for hazardous materials.
Handbook p. 6 ↗ Know the rule
Class M is issued only for motorcycles. Any Class A, B or C license may include the M classification.
Handbook p. 6 ↗ Restriction code A letter on your license meaning you may drive only in certain circumstances or if special provisions are met.
Handbook p. 6 ↗ Two more CDL-only codes: X – No cargo in tank Z – No full air brake Handbook p. 7 ↗ Put it into practice
Your license shows restriction B because you passed the vision screening wearing glasses. You must wear your glasses or contacts every time you drive.
A useful reminder B is for glasses (corrective lenses) and G is daylight only. They are the two codes new drivers see most.
Check your understanding Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
