Exits sneak up at Interstate speeds. Plan ahead, get into the exit lane early, and do your slowing down after you're off the main road. If your vehicle breaks down, get it and your passengers as far from traffic as you can.

Leaving the Interstate:

  • PLAN ahead; watch for signs telling you about your exit and the lane you must use
  • Signal and move into the proper lane a mile or more before the exit
  • NEVER slow down on the Interstate itself
  • SLOW after you turn into the deceleration lane
  • Once off, watch for two-way traffic and check your speed

Handbook p. 62 ↗

Once stopped on the shoulder:

  • Turn on your four-way emergency warning lights
  • At night, use flares or reflectors
  • Don't open doors or get out on the traffic side
  • If you need help, raise the hood and trunk lid or tie a white cloth to the antenna

Know the rule

If you can't get your vehicle off the road, remove all passengers and get them away from the area in case the vehicle is hit.

Handbook p. 62 ↗

Put it into practice

Your tire blows on a bridge on I-80. Don't stop on the bridge. Drive slowly until you're past it, pull all four wheels well onto the right shoulder, turn on your flashers and get out on the side away from traffic.
