There are two roads to full driving privileges. Wait until 17 and you can skip the intermediate stage completely. Or finish approved driver ed and hold an intermediate license for six months to get there at 16½.

Know the rule

At 17 you may get a license with full privileges without ever holding an intermediate license or any other license or permit.

Handbook p. 11 ↗

Know the rule

You can't be issued the license if any current restricted driving privileges are suspended.

Handbook p. 11 ↗

At 17 you must:

  • Present proof of identity
  • Pass the vision screening, a written test and a driving skills test
  • Have a parent or legal guardian sign the Minor's Release Form and pay the fee
Handbook p. 11 ↗

Full privileges at 16½ require:

  • A current intermediate license that is at least six months old
  • Current restricted driving privileges that are not suspended
  • A driver education course approved by the Wyoming Department of Education
Handbook p. 13 ↗

The 16½ applicant must also:

  • Present proof of identity
  • Pass a vision screening
  • Have a parent or guardian sign the Minor's Release Form and pay the fee

Put it into practice

You're 16½, you've held your intermediate license for seven months, and you finished approved driver ed with behind-the-wheel. Bring the signed certificate, ID and a parent-signed release, pass the vision screening, and you can get full privileges.
