Utah driving lesson · Crashes, Insurance & Your Record
Your record and the point system
A 3-minute lesson from the Utah course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Every conviction is posted to your driving record, and moving violations carry points. Pile up too many and you'll be called to a hearing. Drivers under 21 face a much lower threshold, but safe driving erases points over time.
Know the rule
The Driver License Division keeps a computerized driving and crash record for every Utah driver. It shows moving violation convictions and suspensions within the past three years; alcohol/drug-related violations, suspensions, and revocations stay for 10 years.
Courts send notice of each moving violation conviction to the division for your record. Commercial drivers' records also go to the CDL information system, and suspensions and revocations to the national driver register.
After the hearing you may be put on probation, asked to take a defensive driving course, or have your privilege denied or suspended for one month to one year, depending on your record.
An 18-year-old runs a red light (50 points) and later gets a tailgating ticket (60 points). At 110 points within three years, she's past the 70-point under-21 threshold and will be called to a hearing.
