A 3-minute lesson from the Texas course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Most adult Texas licenses last eight years, but renewal is your job, not DPS's. You also have a deadline when you move, and some drivers must renew in person no matter what.
Know the rule
A renewal notice may be mailed to your last known address, but if you don't get it, renewing is still your responsibility.
Military personnel, spouses and dependents returning from active duty within 90 days of honorable discharge can renew without the knowledge and driving exams, even if expired over two years, by showing their Texas license and separation papers.
Texans living out of state may renew by mail with a vision exam result. The license is valid until its expiration or 90 days after returning to Texas, whichever comes first.
You're 80 and your license expires next month. Because license holders 79 or older can't renew online, by phone or by mail, you need an appointment at a driver license office.
