A 3-minute lesson from the Oregon course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Alcohol and drugs slow reactions and cloud judgment, and they raise your chance of a crash that injures or kills. Oregon's DUII law covers any impairing substance, including cannabis and some medications. By driving, you have already agreed to be tested.
Know the rule
Never drive after drinking alcohol or using other drugs. If you've used drugs of any kind, leave the driving to someone else.
Alcohol is the drug most often involved in impaired driving, but marijuana impairment has also contributed to many Oregon collisions. Using alcohol and marijuana together can reduce your ability to drive safely.
Over-the-counter and prescription medicines can impair you. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about side effects; if unsure after a new medication, find different transportation.
Oregon's Open Container law makes it illegal to have an open container of alcohol while you're in a vehicle on any road. Put any open containers in the trunk.
After a party, your friend puts a resealed, half-empty wine bottle on the back seat. The broken seal makes it an open container, even with the cork back in. Move it to the trunk before driving.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
