Tires are your only contact with the road, and lights are how others see you and read your plans. A two-minute tire check and knowing exactly when lights and signals are required prevent many crashes.

Checking tire inflation:

  • Keep tires at the manufacturer's recommended pressure (PSI), shown on the door jamb
  • Check pressure when tires are the same temperature as the surrounding air
  • Remove the valve stem cap and use a pressure gauge
  • Too low: inflate to the correct level. Too high: release air from the tire valve
Handbook p. 8 ↗

Know the rule

A safe tire has at least 1/16-inch tread depth and is free of major bumps, bulges, breaks or tread damage.

Handbook p. 8 ↗

Know the rule

Penny test: put a penny with Lincoln's head into the deepest groove. If you can see all of his head, the tires are too worn — replace them.

Headlights are required:

  • From sunset to sunrise
  • Any time visibility is poor (rain, snow, fog, etc.)

Handbook p. 8 ↗

Know the rule

High beams may be used any time headlights are used, except when an oncoming vehicle is approaching.

Handbook p. 8 ↗

Know the rule

Use turn signals to show you intend to turn right or left, change direction, or change lanes on a multi-lane road.

Handbook p. 8 ↗
100 feet

Activate your turn signal at least this far before changing direction

Handbook p. 8 ↗

Know the rule

Use hazard lights to make a vehicle stopped on or near a roadway more visible.

Handbook p. 8 ↗

Put it into practice

It's 2 p.m. and a light drizzle has you running the wipers. Ohio law requires your headlights on — wipers in use because of precipitation trigger the rule, whatever the time of day.
