Every traffic conviction adds penalty points to your record. Pile up enough within two years and you lose your license. Drivers under 18 face automatic suspensions after far fewer violations.

Know the rule

Courts assess penalty points to any Ohio driver convicted of a traffic violation, based on the type of violation or repeat violations.

After an under-18 suspension, reinstatement requires:

  • Obtaining a TIPIC
  • Completing an approved juvenile driver improvement program
  • Passing the driving examination
Handbook p. 29 ↗

Know the rule

Driving while your license is suspended is a first-degree misdemeanor: a fine of up to $1,000 and possibly an additional one-year suspension.

Handbook p. 30 ↗

Know the rule

An owner who knowingly lets someone with a suspended license drive their vehicle may face the same penalty as the driver.

Handbook p. 30 ↗

Put it into practice

A 17-year-old gets a speeding conviction in March and an illegal-lane-change conviction in June. Two moving violations under 18 means an automatic three-month suspension, and to drive again they'll need a TIPIC, a juvenile driver improvement program and a driving test.
