Getting on a freeway means matching the speed of traffic before you merge. Getting off means planning early, keeping your speed on the main road, and slowing only once you're in the exit lane.

Entering a multi-lane highway:

  • Watch the vehicle ahead of you
  • Look over your shoulder toward the merge and use outside mirrors to find a gap
  • Signal and use the acceleration lane to reach the speed of traffic
  • Merge with the traffic flow
  • Cancel your turn signal
Handbook p. 22 ↗
Highway on-ramp merging
Use the acceleration lane to match traffic speed before merging

Know the rule

Drivers already on a limited-access or interstate highway have the right-of-way over drivers on the entrance ramp.

Handbook p. 13 ↗

Exiting a roadway:

  • Know where you are exiting
  • Move to the lane closest to your exit early enough to avoid a quick lane change
  • Keep your speed while you're on the main roadway
  • Signal, move into the deceleration lane, then slow down
  • Check the posted speed for the deceleration lane
Handbook p. 22 ↗
Highway exit ramp
Slow down in the deceleration lane, not on the main road

Know the rule

If you miss your exit, take the next one.

Handbook p. 22 ↗

Know the rule

Never use the opening through the median — it's only for emergency and public safety vehicles.

Handbook p. 22 ↗

Put it into practice

You spot your exit sign too late and you're two lanes over. Don't swerve across traffic or U-turn through the median. Stay in lane and take the next exit.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

How should you merge onto a multi-lane highway?
  1. Enter at a slow, cautious speed
  2. Stop at the end of the ramp and wait for a gap
  3. Use the acceleration lane to match speed
  4. Merge as quickly as possible regardless of speed

Answer: Use the acceleration lane to match speed

Use the acceleration lane to reach the speed of other vehicles before merging with traffic flow.

Handbook p. 22 ↗
You missed your highway exit. What should you do?
  1. Stop and back up to the exit
  2. Cross the median to turn around
  3. Pull onto the shoulder and wait
  4. Continue to the next exit

Answer: Continue to the next exit

If you miss your exit, do not stop or reverse — take the next available exit instead.

Handbook p. 22 ↗
Who is permitted to use the opening through a highway median?
  1. Emergency and safety vehicles
  2. Any driver who missed their exit
  3. Drivers turning left across traffic
  4. Slow-moving vehicles only

Answer: Emergency and safety vehicles

Median openings are reserved for use only by emergency and public safety vehicles.

Handbook p. 22 ↗
When should you begin slowing down to exit a highway?
  1. As soon as you see the exit sign
  2. In the deceleration lane
  3. While still in a through lane
  4. Immediately upon signaling

Answer: In the deceleration lane

Maintain your speed on the main roadway and slow down only after moving into the deceleration lane.

Handbook p. 22 ↗
It's safe to use a highway median crossover to turn around if you miss your exit.
  1. True
  2. False

Answer: False

Median openings are reserved for emergency and public safety vehicles, not for regular drivers who missed an exit.

Handbook p. 22 ↗
What should you do to identify a gap in traffic before entering a multi-lane highway?
  1. Rely solely on the rearview mirror
  2. Estimate based on speed alone
  3. Look over your shoulder and use your outside mirrors
  4. Wait for a full stop in traffic

Answer: Look over your shoulder and use your outside mirrors

When entering a freeway, look over your shoulder in the merging direction and use outside mirrors to find a gap.
