Other road users can't read your mind. Your lights, horn and signals tell them you're there and what you're about to do — but used wrongly, they confuse or anger people.

Know the rule

It is your responsibility to make your vehicle visible to other road users.

Handbook p. 35 ↗

Know the rule

Headlights are required from sunset to sunrise, whenever visibility is poor (rain, snow, fog, etc.), and whenever wipers are on because of precipitation. High beams may be used except when an oncoming vehicle is approaching.

Handbook p. 35 ↗

Tap your horn lightly when:

  • Pedestrians or bicyclists seem to be moving into your lane
  • You're passing a driver who starts to turn into your lane
  • A driver isn't paying attention or may have trouble seeing you
Handbook p. 35 ↗

Know the rule

Use your horn only to communicate with other road users. Using it inappropriately can scare or anger others.

Handbook p. 35 ↗
Horn (signaling device)
Use the horn only to communicate

Know the rule

Signal when changing lanes, merging into traffic, or turning left or right.

Handbook p. 35 ↗
100 feet

Signal a turn at least this far ahead

Handbook p. 35 ↗

Know the rule

Cancel your signal after the move so you don't confuse other drivers.

Handbook p. 35 ↗

Know the rule

Brake lights show you're slowing or stopping.

Handbook p. 35 ↗

Use your turn signal before you slow down when:

  • Turning off a road that has no separate turn or exit lane
  • Parking or turning just before an intersection
Handbook p. 35 ↗

Put it into practice

You want to turn into a driveway just before an intersection on a road with no turn lane. Signal before you start braking so the driver behind knows you're slowing to turn, not stopping at the corner.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

When does the manual say to use your turn signal before reducing speed?
  1. Whenever you brake on a freeway
  2. When parking or turning just before an intersection
  3. Only when a car follows closely
  4. When slowing for a yellow light

Answer: When parking or turning just before an intersection

Use turn signals before reducing speed when turning off a roadway without separate turn lanes, or when parking or turning before an intersection.

Handbook p. 35 ↗
When should you use your horn while driving?
  1. Only to communicate with other road users
  2. Whenever you're frustrated with traffic
  3. Before every lane change
  4. Only when another driver cuts you off

Answer: Only to communicate with other road users

Only use your horn to communicate with other road users — using it inappropriately can scare or anger them.

Handbook p. 35 ↗

  1. True
  2. False
