North Dakota winters demand extra care. Check whether roads are closed, clear every window, and be ready to slow down. On ice, the right way to brake depends on what kind of brakes your vehicle has.

Know the rule

Brakes work best just before your tires start to skid or slide on the road surface.

Handbook p. 31 ↗
$250

Fine for entering a road officially closed due to hazardous conditions

Handbook p. 31 ↗

Know the rule

Keep the windshield clear: let the defroster warm up while you scrape ice off the windows. Use washer fluid with anti-freeze, but know it can freeze on the glass at high speeds in very cold weather and block your view.

Handbook p. 32 ↗

Know the rule

Get the feel of the road. Try your brakes while driving slowly, and adjust your speed to the traction you have.

Handbook p. 32 ↗

Know the rule

Slow down. Snow tires or tire chains help, but you should still double your following distance.

Handbook p. 32 ↗
Oct 15 – Apr 15

Dates when studded snow tires may be used

Handbook p. 32 ↗

Know the rule

Passing trucks may create snow fog that greatly reduces visibility. Look ahead for curves, look behind for vehicles following you, and slow down.

Handbook p. 32 ↗

Know the rule

Frost and ice form quicker and last longer on bridges and in shaded spots than on the rest of the road.

Handbook p. 32 ↗

Stopping on ice

Stopping on ice
BrakesTechnique
Drum brakes on all four wheelsPump the brakes
Disc brakesSlow, intermittent: fully on, then fully off
Antilock brakes (ABS)Firm, continuous pressure; don't pump
Handbook p. 32 ↗

Know the rule

Slamming on your brakes locks the wheels and makes the tires skid. Pumping ABS or letting up on it turns the system off and on and reduces its effectiveness.

Handbook p. 32 ↗

Know the rule

Carry a winter survival kit in your vehicle: warm clothing, footwear, a shovel, energy food, and so on.

Handbook p. 32 ↗

Know the rule

If you get stuck in a snowstorm, stay with your vehicle; most deaths happen when people leave and get lost. Open windows slightly and run the engine and heater only for short periods to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Stay active and don't panic.

Handbook p. 32 ↗

Put it into practice

Your car has ABS and starts sliding toward an icy intersection. Press the brake pedal firmly and hold steady pressure. Don't pump it; pumping turns the ABS off and on and makes it less effective.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

What is the fine for entering a road that is officially closed due to hazardous conditions?
  1. $500
  2. $250
  3. $1,000
  4. $100

Answer: $250

It is not legal to enter a road officially closed due to hazardous conditions; the penalty is a $250 fine.

Handbook p. 31 ↗
During what months may studded snow tires be used in North Dakota?
  1. Year-round, no restriction
  2. September 1 to May 1
  3. November 1 to March 1
  4. October 15 to April 15

Answer: October 15 to April 15

Studded snow tires may be used from October 15 to April 15.

Handbook p. 32 ↗
How should you brake on ice in a vehicle with anti-lock brakes (ABS)?
  1. Avoid using the brakes at all
  2. Alternate between full brake and full release
  3. Pump the brakes rapidly
  4. Apply firm, steady pressure, no pumping

Answer: Apply firm, steady pressure, no pumping

Keep firm and continuous pressure on anti-lock brakes; pumping ABS decreases effectiveness by turning the system off and on.

Handbook p. 32 ↗
If your vehicle becomes stuck in a snowstorm, what should you do?
  1. Leave the vehicle immediately to find help
  2. Run the engine continuously with all windows closed
  3. Stay with it; run the heater only briefly
  4. Keep the engine off the whole time

Answer: Stay with it; run the heater only briefly

Stay with the vehicle; most deaths occur when people leave and get lost. Crack a window and run the heater for short periods to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

Handbook p. 32 ↗
Vehicles with drum-type brakes on all wheels should use what braking technique to stop on ice?
  1. Brake hard and hold
  2. Coast to a stop without braking
  3. Pump the brakes
  4. Apply firm, continuous pressure without pumping

Answer: Pump the brakes

To stop on ice, pump the brakes when driving vehicles equipped with drum-type brakes on all four wheels.

Handbook p. 32 ↗
What braking technique should disc-brake vehicles use on icy roads?
  1. One hard brake application
  2. Intermittent braking, fully on then fully off
  3. No braking, only steering
  4. Continuous light pressure only

Answer: Intermittent braking, fully on then fully off

Vehicles with disc brakes require slow, intermittent braking, fully on and then fully off, to let the brakes release.
