Crash reports & liability insurance
A 3-minute lesson from the North Dakota course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
After a crash, the law spells out who you must notify and what information you must share. North Dakota also requires liability insurance whenever you drive, with fines and license consequences if you're caught without it.
$4,000
Combined damage that makes a crash reportable (any injury or death does too)
If the driver is physically unable to report the crash and isn't the owner, the vehicle's owner must give notice and any missing insurance information within five days after learning of the crash.
If you hit an unattended vehicle, immediately find and notify the owner. If you can't, leave a note in a conspicuous place on the vehicle with your name, address and insurance company.
No one may drive in North Dakota without a valid liability insurance policy in effect. You must give your insurance carrier and policy number to a law enforcement officer who asks.
A no-insurance conviction may also bring a license suspension. For one year you must prove liability insurance to the division, carrying a $50 duplicate license with a Proof of Liability Insurance restriction. Removing the restriction after the year costs another $50.
You back into a parked car in a lot and can't find the owner. Leave a note in a conspicuous place on that car with your name, address and insurance company.
