Every traffic conviction adds points to your record, and more serious offenses carry more points. Reach 12 and your license is headed for suspension. Clean driving and approved courses bring the total back down.
Know the rule
After each violation, its points are added to your driving record, normally within 10 days of conviction. The more serious the offense, the higher its point value.
Handbook p. 44 ↗ Know the rule
When your record reaches 12 or more points, you'll be told the authorities intend to suspend your license and that you may have an administrative hearing.
Handbook p. 44 ↗ Ways to reduce your point total: One point for every three-month period with no points recorded against you Three points for completing an approved driver improvement course, such as defensive driving Take a driver improvement course instead of points, for a violation worth five points or less Handbook p. 44 ↗ Know the rule
The course-instead-of-points option is valid once every 12 months and may not be combined with the three-point course reduction.
Handbook p. 44 ↗ Know the rule
Driving in violation of the conditions of an instruction permit adds two points to your record.
Handbook p. 8 ↗ Know the rule
A parent or guardian who consented to a minor's permit or license can withdraw that consent at any time, and the permit or license will be cancelled. The teen can regain it with parental consent or on turning 18.
Handbook p. 44 ↗ Put it into practice
A driver's record reaches 14 points. That's 3 points over 11, so the suspension is 3 × 7 = 21 days.
A useful reminder Suspension math: (points − 11) × 7 days. So 12 points = 7 days, 13 points = 14 days.
