Snowmobiles
A 3-minute lesson from the North Dakota course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Snowmobiles are part of North Dakota winters, and the law limits where you can ride them. On a highway right of way you need a license or safety certificate, the machine needs certain equipment, and riders under 18 need a helmet.
Know the rule
To operate a snowmobile on a highway right of way, you must have a valid driver's license or a snowmobile safety certificate from the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department.
To cross a road, yield to all roadway traffic, stop completely before reaching the shoulder, and cross at right angles when it's clear. On a divided highway, cross only at intersections.
It's late March, and there's snow in the ditch along a state highway. You may ride there until April 1, moving the same direction as traffic. To cross the road, stop before the shoulder, yield, and cross at a right angle.
