A 3-minute lesson from the New York course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Before you get a permit you pass two tests at DMV: a vision check and a written knowledge test. The written test covers rules of the road, safe driving, road signs, and the laws on alcohol and drugs, so everything in this course is fair game.
20/40
Vision needed in at least one eye, with or without corrective lenses
The written test for a Class D, M, DJ, MJ or E license covers the rules of the road, safe driving techniques, road signs, and laws about alcohol and drug use while driving.
Class D knowledge tests are offered in multiple languages, on touch-screen test stations or on paper. Motorcycle applicants also study the Motorcycle Operator's Manual (MV-21MC); CDL Classes A, B and C have a separate test.
Lets students at least 15 years and 11 months old take the written test at participating high schools, in English or Spanish, before applying for a permit.
You answer 16 of 20 questions correctly but miss three of the four road-sign questions. You fail: you needed at least 2 of the 4 sign questions right, no matter how good your total was.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
