A 3-minute lesson from the New Jersey course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
First-time drivers in New Jersey earn full privileges in stages. You start with a permit and supervised practice, move to a probationary license with limits, and only then get a basic license. Which path you take depends on your age.
Know the rule
New Jersey began the GDL Program in 2001. You must be at least 18 to receive an unrestricted basic driver license.
The MVC validates a special learner permit only after the training course is completed. The permit may not be used for practice until validated at an MVC Driver Testing Center.
Maya turns 17 and gets an examination permit (Option B). She practices six months and logs 50 hours, 10 of them after dark, then passes the road test. She drives on a probationary license for a year and can get her basic license once she is 18.
