A 3-minute lesson from the New Jersey course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Most passenger cars in New Jersey get a state inspection every two years once they're more than five model years old, while commercial vehicles go every year. Every registered vehicle must also carry liability insurance and keep the insurance ID card with the driver.
Know the rule
Gasoline-fueled passenger vehicles, model year 1996 and newer and more than five model years old, must pass inspection every two years at a State inspection station or a licensed private inspection facility (PIF).
Diesel passenger vehicles, model year 1997 and newer, more than five model years old, with a GVWR of 8,500 pounds or less, must pass emissions inspection every two years.
Commercial-registered gasoline vehicles, and diesel ones with a GVWR of 8,500 or less, must be inspected every year. Those under one year old from a dealer get a sticker expiring one year after first registration.
Keep the New Jersey insurance ID card in the vehicle with the driver. Show it before inspection, after a crash, and when police stop you. An electronic version is acceptable.
Failing to keep liability insurance or driving an uninsured vehicle can bring fines, community service, license and registration suspension, and surcharges.
Insurance fraud can bring criminal charges, civil fines of up to $15,000 per violation, and loss of your license. Report fraud anonymously at (877) 55-FRAUD.
You move from Florida with a 2016 sedan. Register it within 60 days of moving; because it's more than five model years old, have it inspected within 14 days after you register it.
