Road markings guide, warn and regulate traffic, and they may be yellow or white. Yellow lines separate traffic moving in opposite directions, and whether they're broken or solid tells you if you may pass.

Know the rule

Yellow center lines mean two-way traffic flowing in opposite directions.

Handbook p. 52 ↗
Broken yellow center line
Broken yellow center line

Know the rule

Broken yellow line: passing on the left is permitted when the way ahead is clear. Pass with care because of oncoming traffic.

Handbook p. 52 ↗
Solid and broken yellow lines
Solid and broken yellow lines

Double solid yellow lines

Know the rule

Double solid yellow lines mark the center of the road and separate oncoming traffic. Passing is not allowed in either direction.

Handbook p. 52 ↗

Know the rule

The only lawful crossings of double yellow lines are making a left turn into or from an alley, private road or driveway, or avoiding an obstruction, unless signs prohibit it.

Handbook p. 52 ↗
Two-way left turn lane markings
Shared center left-turn lane

Know the rule

A center lane with solid and broken yellow lines on each side is a shared left-turn lane for traffic from both directions. Enter with caution and only to turn left; passing in it is prohibited. Signs or pavement arrows help identify it.

Handbook p. 53 ↗

Reversible lane markings

Know the rule

Reversible lanes are marked with double-dashed broken yellow lines. The lane's direction of travel changes as shown by traffic signs or signals.

Handbook p. 62 ↗

Put it into practice

You're behind a slow tractor. On your side of the center is a solid yellow line with a broken line beyond it. You may not pass. Wait until the broken line is on your side and the way ahead is clear.
