Nebraska law requires certain equipment on your vehicle, limits how dark your windows can be, and expects you to keep your tires in safe shape. A quick monthly check keeps you legal and safe.

Required equipment on Nebraska vehicles:

  • Headlights, tail lights and brake lights
  • Turn signals and a horn
  • Windshield wipers and a muffler
  • Seat belts (appropriate to the year manufactured)
  • Two brake systems: service brake and parking brake
  • Safety glass in all windows
  • Pneumatic tires with at least 2/32" tread
  • No objects hanging or posted in windows that obstruct vision
Handbook p. 37 ↗

Know the rule

1 psi

Pressure a tire can lose each month, so check every tire, including the spare, monthly or before a long trip

Handbook p. 38 ↗

Checking tire pressure:

  • Use a trusted pressure gauge
  • Check tires cold: before driving or at least three hours after
  • Compare to the sticker inside the driver's door or the owner's manual, NOT the tire sidewall
  • Let air out or add air until it matches
Handbook p. 38 ↗

The penny test for tread:

  • Hold the penny by Lincoln's body
  • Find the spot where the tread looks lowest and put Lincoln's head into a groove
  • If any part of Lincoln's head is covered by tread, you have a safe amount
Handbook p. 38 ↗

Put it into practice

Your gauge reads 38 psi. The tire sidewall shows a higher number, but the sticker inside the driver's door says 35. Let air out until the gauge reads 35; the door sticker is the number to match.
