Graduated licensing rules keep new drivers out of the riskiest situations: phones, crowded cars, late nights and alcohol. Breaking them costs fines, points, or your permit.
POP nighttime: you may drive unsupervised between 12 midnight and 6 a.m. only when driving between home and work or a school activity. With a parent, guardian or licensed driver 21+, you may drive anytime.
Drivers under 21 may not drive with alcohol or other drugs in their system. A first offense means the court impounds the permit or license for 30 days.
You're 16, three months into your POP, and two non-family friends aged 17 and 18 want a ride home from practice at 7 p.m. You may take only one of them. Everyone in the car buckles up, and you're home before midnight.
