Before you slow down, turn or change lanes, make sure you can do it safely, then tell drivers, cyclists and pedestrians what you're about to do. Kansas sets a minimum signaling distance and specific lane rules for turns.

100 feet

Minimum distance to signal before making the move or turn (K.S.A. 8-1548)

Handbook p. 17 ↗

Know the rule

Hold your signal until you're ready to make the turn. If your vehicle is required to have turn signals, you must use its electric turn signals.

Handbook p. 17 ↗

Know the rule

Right turn from a four-lane divided highway: enter the right lane well in advance and make a tight turn into the right lane of the cross street (K.S.A. 8-1545).

Handbook p. 17 ↗

Know the rule

Left turn: move near the center line or traffic divider and turn from the inside lane without swinging wide, entering the cross street just right of its center line.

Handbook p. 17 ↗

Know the rule

Some intersections are marked to permit turns from more than one lane. You may turn as the signs or pavement markings indicate.

Handbook p. 17 ↗

Do not make a U-turn (K.S.A. 8-1546):

  • On a curve
  • Near the top of a hill
  • Anywhere other drivers cannot see you for at least 500 feet
  • Where local ordinances or regulatory signs prohibit it
Handbook p. 17 ↗
500 feet

Other drivers must be able to see you at least this far away for a legal U-turn

Handbook p. 17 ↗

Put it into practice

You're turning left from a four-lane divided highway. Move to the lane next to the divider, signal at least 100 feet ahead, and turn tightly so you end up just right of the cross street's center line instead of swinging wide.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
