A 3-minute lesson from the Kansas course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
The skills test checks slow-speed control: turning around and parallel parking. It may be done off-street, on-street during the road test, or both. The examiner gives detailed instructions and you can ask questions.
Forward two-point: pull forward into the driveway until your back end passes the front cones and you're out of the roadway, back to the right into the street, then drive forward out.
Reverse two-point: drive past the driveway, back to the right into it until your front end clears the front cones, then drive left into the street and forward out.
Parallel park (left or right side): drive past the space and back in, completely inside it and within 12 inches of the curb side, without crossing side or rear boundaries.
While parallel parking you stop, pull forward to straighten out, then back up again. Each change of direction counts as a reversal error, so plan your approach to back in with one smooth move.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
On the basic control skills test, what is counted as a "reversal" error?
Stopping without changing direction
Stopping and backing up to get a better position
Touching a cone with your side mirror
Using the wrong turn signal
Answer: Stopping and backing up to get a better position
Page 100: a reversal is when you stop and reverse direction to get a better position; stopping without changing direction is not a reversal.
