Alcohol and drugs slow your thinking, coordination, and reaction time. An impaired driver can turn a car into a lethal weapon, so learn the warning signs.

Know the rule

The likelihood of an accident increases when a driver is under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Alcohol harms clear thinking and physical coordination and decreases reaction time.

Handbook p. 64 ↗

The primary factors that determine your BAC:

  • How much alcohol you drink
  • How quickly you drink it
  • Your body weight
Handbook p. 64 ↗

Know the rule

Many prescription, over-the-counter, and recreational drugs also impair reasoning and coordination. Check the label and discuss side effects with a physician or pharmacist before driving.

Handbook p. 64 ↗

A driver may be impaired if the vehicle:

  • Makes wide turns
  • Straddles the center line or weaves back and forth
  • Exceeds the speed limit or drives unusually slowly
  • Comes close to hitting another vehicle or object
  • Swerves, drifts, or follows too closely
  • Stops for no reason or turns abruptly or illegally
  • Signals inconsistently or drives at night without headlights

Legal BAC limit in Indiana

Handbook p. 28 ↗

Know the rule

Refusing a chemical test brings a one-year suspension, or two years with a previous OWI conviction. Failing one brings 180 days.

Handbook p. 29 ↗

Know the rule

If you're suspected of drunk driving, refusing breath, urine, blood, or performance tests can cost you your driving privileges.

Handbook p. 66 ↗

Put it into practice

You took a new cold medicine that may cause drowsiness. Before driving, read the label and ask your pharmacist about side effects. Over-the-counter drugs can impair your reasoning and coordination just as alcohol can.
