A stopped school bus with flashing red lights means children may be crossing right in front of you. Hawaii's rule covers your lane and every lane next to the bus, with one exception on divided highways.

Know the rule

When a school bus is stopped on a highway with alternating red lamps flashing, drivers in the bus's lane and all lanes next to it must stop before reaching the bus.

Handbook p. 96 ↗

Know the rule

Stay stopped until the bus moves again or the flashing red lamps turn off.

Handbook p. 31 ↗

Know the rule

Children waiting along the road in the morning signal a school bus is in the area, and they may dart in front of traffic.

Handbook p. 96 ↗

Know the rule

Be especially watchful for children near schools, parks, playgrounds and in residential areas, and stop at the signal of any school crossing guard.

Handbook p. 95 ↗

Put it into practice

On a two-lane road without a median, a school bus ahead of you in the oncoming lane stops and flashes its red lights. You must stop, because you're in a lane next to the bus. Only a divided highway exempts opposite-direction traffic.
