A 4-minute lesson from the Hawaii course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
A license is only good while it's valid and carried. This lesson covers the documents Hawaii needs for a REAL ID license, how renewal works, the no-grace-period rule, and what you must do when you move.
For a REAL ID license or permit, bring originals or certified copies proving:
Your legal name
Your date of birth
Legal presence in the U.S.A.
Your social security number
Two forms of proof of your principal residence address in Hawaii
A REAL ID license may be renewed by mail, but you must appear in person no later than every 16 years for a new photo. With temporary legal presence, you appear in person at every renewal.
Issued if you refuse or can't provide a social security number. Valid for driving only: not federal ID (e.g., boarding an airplane) and not proof for jobs, voting or public benefits.
The address notice must list your old and new address, your name and license number. For a REAL ID license, submit two documents proving your new address.
Applicant records go to the National Driver Register. If it shows a license suspended or revoked in another state or D.C., Hawaii will not issue a license.
Your license expired two weeks ago and you want to drive yourself to the renewal office. You can't: the license became void the day after it expired. Get a ride, and renew within a year of expiration to avoid starting over.
Check your understanding
