A stopped school bus with its stop signal out means children may cross the road. Whether you must stop depends on your direction and on what separates you from the bus. Painted lines never count.

Know the rule

It's illegal for any driver to pass a school bus that displays its stop signal.

Handbook p. 97 ↗

Know the rule

On a two-way street or highway, drivers in BOTH directions must stop for a stopped school bus picking up or dropping off children. Stay stopped until the stop signal is withdrawn and all children are off the road.

Handbook p. 97 ↗
School bus stop law (two-lane road)
Two-lane road: traffic in both directions stops
School bus stop law (no physical median)
Multi-lane paved road: traffic in both directions stops

Know the rule

On a highway divided by a raised barrier or an unpaved median at least five feet wide, you don't have to stop if you're moving in the opposite direction from the bus. Proceed with caution.

Handbook p. 97 ↗
Unpaved shoulder/barrier caution and school bus stop
Divided by an unpaved median of 5 ft+ or a barrier: only traffic behind the bus stops

Know the rule

Painted lines or pavement markings are NOT barriers. You must still stop.

Handbook p. 97 ↗

Know the rule

If you're moving in the same direction as the bus, you must always stop and stay stopped until the stop signal is withdrawn.

Handbook p. 97 ↗

Know the rule

Buses with camera enforcement are marked 'CAMERA ENFORCED' with a camera symbol. The registered owner of a violating vehicle faces a $200 civil penalty. (Pending 2023 legislation.)

Handbook p. 4 ↗

Know the rule

Crossing guards are the first to enter and the last to leave a crosswalk. When they are present in a crosswalk, yield and stop at the stop line, not in the crosswalk.

Handbook p. 97 ↗

Put it into practice

On a four-lane road with only a painted center line, a school bus stops in the opposite lanes with its stop arm out. You must stop too. Painted lines aren't a barrier, and only a raised barrier or an unpaved median of 5 feet or more would let you continue.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

On a two-way street, when a school bus is stopped with its stop signal displayed, which vehicles must stop?
  1. All vehicles, both directions
  2. Only vehicles in the lane beside the bus
  3. Only vehicles behind the bus
  4. Only oncoming vehicles

Answer: All vehicles, both directions

On a two-way street, all drivers moving in either direction must stop for a stopped school bus picking up or dropping off children.

Handbook p. 97 ↗
On a divided highway with a raised barrier at least 5 feet wide, do vehicles moving in the opposite direction of a stopped school bus have to stop?
  1. Yes, always
  2. No, they do not have to stop
  3. Only if going faster than 35 mph
  4. Only during school hours

Answer: No, they do not have to stop

If the highway is divided by a raised barrier or unpaved median at least five feet wide, opposite-direction traffic does not have to stop.

Handbook p. 97 ↗
Are painted lines or pavement markings alone considered a barrier that excuses opposite-direction traffic from stopping for a school bus?
  1. Yes, any painted median line counts
  2. Only double yellow lines count
  3. No, markings are not barriers
  4. Only if the lines are more than 10 feet apart

Answer: No, markings are not barriers

Painted lines or pavement markings are not considered barriers; a raised barrier or median of at least 5 feet is required.

Handbook p. 97 ↗
Vehicles moving in the same direction as a stopped school bus must:
  1. Pass carefully at reduced speed
  2. Stop, then pass slowly if no children
  3. Only stop if children are visible
  4. Stop until the stop signal is withdrawn

Answer: Stop until the stop signal is withdrawn

You must always stop if moving in the same direction as the bus and remain stopped until the stop signal is withdrawn.

Handbook p. 97 ↗
When a school crossing guard is present in a crosswalk, where must you stop?
  1. At the stop line, not in the crosswalk
  2. In the crosswalk itself
  3. Just past the crosswalk
  4. You don't need to stop if the guard waves you through

Answer: At the stop line, not in the crosswalk

When present in a crosswalk, you must yield and stop at the stop line, not in the crosswalk.

Handbook p. 97 ↗

  1. True
  2. False
