Alcohol weakens every skill driving needs: judgment, reaction, vision and concentration. It works fast and starts with your judgment, so the first thing you lose is the ability to notice you're impaired.

Know the rule

Alcohol is absorbed into the lining of the stomach, passes directly into the bloodstream, and reaches your brain within minutes after you drink.

Handbook p. 43 ↗

Know the rule

Judgment is the first thing affected after drinking an alcoholic beverage.

Handbook p. 43 ↗

Alcohol:

  • Slows your reflexes and reaction time
  • Reduces your ability to see clearly
  • Makes you less alert
  • Makes it hard to judge the distance, speed and movement of other vehicles
  • Makes it hard to control your vehicle
Handbook p. 43 ↗

Know the rule

Even one drink can affect your driving and makes a crash much more likely. No one can drink alcohol and drive safely, however many years they have been driving.

Handbook p. 43 ↗

Drinking and driving risks:

  • Heavy fines
  • Higher insurance rates
  • Loss of your driver license
  • Jail sentences
Handbook p. 43 ↗

Don't drink and drive:

  • Before drinking, choose a sober designated driver
  • If you are the designated driver, don't drink. One drink is one too many
  • If you're impaired and have no driver, use a rideshare, call a sober friend or relative, or take transit
Handbook p. 43 ↗

Know the rule

Friends don't let friends drive drunk. If someone is about to drive impaired, take their keys and help them get a safe ride home.

Handbook p. 43 ↗

Put it into practice

After a party your friend insists he feels fine after 'only a couple.' His judgment is the first thing alcohol affects, so his opinion of himself can't be trusted. Take his keys and get him a rideshare or a sober driver.
